We have experienced anything from one or two smtp crashes a day to a worst period where it crashed more than once a minute at which time I had to reboot the server.
Verifying HELO/EHLO was a guaranteed maximum smtp crash. We do not do that anymore.
We have tried all the registry tricks recommended, reinstalled completely, all the hot fixes are applied, keep the spam folders cleaned out, delete all virus files, defrag on a nightly basis, set the service to automatically restart... etc.
All this has minimized the failures.
I am not willing to shut down all the anti spam filtering to see if it goes away because the benefits so far out weigh the down side of having 10-20k spams going through a day.
Interesting problem.

I should add that in our case, given enough time, every IMail service eventually halts and the server itself becomes generally unresponsive, taking forever to even shutdown. The unresponsiveness is such that Dr. Watson almost never is able to write anything.
Haven't seen this problem, we're running latest MS Hotfixes on Win2k, but we're still on Imail 8.05 (HF3)
Don't know if this would help you, but I've found that turning off the dump file for DrWatson makes crash recovery a hell of a lot faster.
run cmd line, drwtsn32 -> uncheck "Create crash dump file" and click ok.
You can still enable crash log, to have a log of crashes and to see which app crashed, but unless you're debugging I think the dump is useless.

That could be correct. Because. I saw this first time after the latest MS Hotfix update last week! Only a few ours after the restart

I don't think it is an IMail problem. We have been experiencing this on one of our web servers for the last week or so. I think perhaps it is one of the latest MS hotfixes.
