I think that blocking viruses at the ISP level is the only practical means
of protection, especially since a huge percentage of viruses are spread via
email. Users should still protect themselves...but the keyword there is
/should/. Why not let the professionals handle it (i.e. - us)?

I consider it a duty of ISPs to filter viruses, and not as an Add-On
service, but as a basic part of email hosting. Email viruses are easy to
stop, all we need to do, as an ISP community, is to commit ourselves to
stomping these bugs when they hit our systems.

It's interesting that we (ISP's) have been roped into taking care of Viruses
for our customers rather than them paying for their own Antivirus software.

I resolved the problem by deleting any email that comes in with attachments
with the common problem extensions.

Actually, I have a rationale that says none of my users need "dot" exe
files.

In the Windows 98 world, where all this originated, it made sense to block
them because they would execute and install without administrative
privilege. Now that all my 2k and XP users are set up as "less than
administrator", it's not so much an issue anymore.

However, I have noticed that more ISPs use Imail than I originally expected.
In that line of work, you have to have that clearinghouse, I suppose, else
your customers get really bent.
