IMail was certainly originally designed for single-server environments. Remarkably, plenty of servers running IMail 7.x and earlier are still in use as both MXs and mailbox servers, though queue management prior to 8.x is certainly not up to snuff. The concept of "efficiency" is site-specific, and many admins forget that there are sites that see just a few thousand messages per day, shifting the question from "Can my software/hardware combo handle the overall traffic level, including legit and illegit mail?" to "Can my software/hardware combo efficiently filter spam and viruses with the highest administrative comfort level, lowest ruleset maintenance requirements, and user self-management features?" You can't simply think of PostFix/SpamAssassin as the "free" version of IMail, IMail/Declude, or IMail/mxGuard.
