John - mxGuard indeed started out as a $99 anti-spam plug-in/add-on for IMail. Due to customer demand, we added free hooks to several anti-virus products (ClamAV, F-Prot, NAI) so folks can protect their subscriber boxes without paying the high prices for solutions offered elsewhere.
mxGuard uses several DNS based tests (i.e. free) and builds a 'spamscore' from the results. Message Sniffer is *optional*. The reason we have a link to Message Sniffer is because we feel it is an outstanding product. Message Sniffer has a database of patterns that it uses to identify spam and requires a subscription (purchased from www.sortmonster.com). Message Sniffer is also useful for shops that don't trust the various DNS blacklists and prefer to have a custom database that they can add rules to instead. Message Sniffer does require a 3rd party plug-in such as mxGuard in order to work with an IMail server.
