We use Symantec Mail Security for SMTP Gateways. We use Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for all our users, so we don't have to pay any extra to use the Email Gateway solution. If you have 4000 Corporate Edition Clients, that gives you 4000 licences to use the Gateway product.
Symantec have just moved to version 4 of the product, and we love it. The interface is very simple and straight forward. The antivirus definitions are updated regularly for the product, on much the same timetable as the desktop clients definitions. Previous versions searched inside ZIP files for viruses, but had trouble with other compressed file types. Version 4 does them all; .rar .tar .ace etc The "out-of-the-box" heuristic spam engine is fantastic. We do not even bother with Imail's anti-spam features as they are just useless really. There are 5 sensitivity levels for spam. We have ours set at 4 (second highest) and there are very few false positives. You can use Internet Blacklists, custom blacklists, auto-generated whitelists, custom-generated whitelists, body and subject content filtering. It pretty much does it all for us. We prefix the subject of all spam messages with the word SPAM: In imail, we have a domain wide rule that says any message with SPAM: in the subject, move to a mailbox called SPAM. This way all the spam is not delivered to a users main mailbox, so they don't download it to their email client (Outlook Express, etc). We encourage users to check their spam folder regularly, which they can do by signing in to webmail. If a false-positive is picked up, they can forward to a central email address such as [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can look at the messages and decide whether we should whitelist the domain in SMS SMTP. Seeing as we are an Australian company we generally whitelist most of the .com.au addresses that are wrongly marked as spam. This solution works for us. We have not received one single virus via email in over 18 months. Probably closer to 2 years actually. The logs in SMS SMTP (which are so easy to use) show at the moment we are blocking around 12,000 mass mailers a day trying to come in. Thank god for antivirus is all I can say! Hope this helps. The ability to use more than one anti-virus scanner is what excited me about Declude Virus Pro. 1. If one anti-virus fails, I still have another anti-virus scanning the e-mail. 2. The windows of viral opportunity can be minimized with multiple anti-virus vendors . Odds are two/three companies won't all be slow on getting their definitions updated. 3. If you are truly paranoid, you can also run a different anti-virus than your workstations, giving you another chance to pick up the virus. 4. You can use single server/workstation licenses. I spend about $100 a year to license those three scanners. Scott Fisher Director of IT Farm Progress Companies >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/23/04 10:27AM >>> I don't know if this is proper for the list or not, so please forgive if it isn't. I just took over managing IMail for one of our clients and they are wanting to implement anti-virus on their e-mail server. I don't have a whole lot of experience with IMail and I was wondering if anyone could suggest an anti-virus solution that would integrate with the server software to scan individual messages as they are sent and received.
