It seems that more and more spammers are using the secondary/backup/store-and-forward mail server to deliver their spam.
Correct. They have been doing this for several years. That's one of the main reasons that Declude JunkMail was designed from the beginning to work with multiple "hops" -- which means that even if you have gateways or backup mailservers, Declude JunkMail will still see the correct source of the E-mail.
Filtering options seem limited in this configuration, since there are no hosts on the machine which to configure for spam filtering.
For IMail v8's anti-spam, you are correct.
Furthermore, it seems that even though I do not have the secondary server IP whitelisted on the primary, spam still gets through... much to the chagrin of our BlackBerry users.
That's because of two issues -- first, you can't whitelist the secondary (backup) mailserver (or else ALL spam will get through it), and second, IMail v8's anti-spam is one of many anti-spam programs that assumes that it is the front end mailserver, and that there are no mailservers in front of it. As a result, it assumes that the E-mail came from the IP of your secondary mailserver.
Does anyone have a pointer to a definitive FAQ on setting up robust spam filtering when you have a secondary mail server that's being targeted by spammers?
Yes -- you either need a fully featured anti-spam program (such as our Declude JunkMail), or you need to work with the limitations of the anti-spam software that you are using (spending time tweaking filters and such, or creating your own blacklists).
