I have tried everything suggested and them some to no avail.
My current work around is to have the service automatically restart.
We may go a day or two or more without SMTP service crapping out but then get one or more per day for a while. The problem doesn't seem to be consistent.
I have cleaned out our spool. Re installed from scratch. Everything I've been told to (and that was limited from ipswitch) and still have the problem.
The only thing I can tell you is keep an eye on your system and keep it lean and mean and clean.
If anyone else has a "cure" for the problem please speak up.

I chalked up the first set of errors as "the server needing a reboot (thanks, Microsoft)", but now that we've seen it again, I'm starting to wonder if it's a "specially formatted (broken?) message" as the result of a virus or worm, that is just "breaking" SMTP32.exe somehow.
We haven't seen any of these for the past 12 hours or so, but the next time it happens, I'll start dissecting the spool directory to see if I can narrow it down...
In our case, nothing "hangs" or totally breaks... the system otherwise continues to function normally.
Thoughts/perspectives are welcome.
