Thanks Jim.  I found your archived post and it pushed me in the right direction.

Here's how we fixed the problem:

When we went into each of the problem accounts using the Imail client program, in 
every case we saw 5 or 6 'empty' email messages somewhere in the corrupt mailbox.  No 
subject.  No sender.  Complely empty.  And these empty messages were not showing up in 
Web Messaging.  Deleting those empty messages instantly fixed the problem in every 
case.
