I sometimes think that I will never really exceed in doing business, because
I refuse to do things like this to people who trust in our offerings. We've
lost a lot of revenue because we don't allow spammers and will not host
sites for those who do. We don't make false claims like a lot of other web
hosting companies and we don't use pirated software like I know a lot of
them do. How else can they afford to setup a dedicated server for free?

Now we have those that we've trusted shafting us left and right I am
beginning to lose faith. Must us little people revert to bad business ethics
to survive this dog eat dog world?

Subject: RE: [IMail Forum] Collaboration is now available :(

This sounds like a company that is in dire straights already, if you ask me.

A couple of years ago, they came out with the antivirus thing which was
extremely expensive for not much add on. My guess is that they sold
practically zero of these licenses and have been leaking money ever since.

Their new sales and existing support contracts of Imail Server obviously
isn't doing it for them, so they've made a decision:

"Hell, our customers are not buying into our added features method of
drumming up extra money. Let's up the price of the product X 4. We'll give
them some new features whether they want them or not. We'll probably loose
1/2 of our customers, but that is more than made up for by the other half
that is paying X 4. We have nothing to lose, they way we are going we'll be
gone in one year anyway!"

This whole thing reminds me of WebTrends. I haven't upgraded that in years
either and the older version still does the job quite well.

For the last few years our Imail history has been like this:

from 1996-2000 we had three unlimited (they were all unlimited in the
beginning, remember those days?) licenses of Imail server with maintenance
contracts for all three.

Somewhere around 2000 they upped their pricing by about twice.

In 2000 we decided we weren't getting much for our money on the maintenance
contracts as it took about a year for a new version's bugs to be worked out
and we weren't upgrading to new vesions until they were a year old anyway.
The interim updates were free. ... SPAM was getting big so we needed to
provide better smtp security anyway, IpSwitch sure wasn't going to provide
it. So, we pulled the plug on maintenance contracts and waited until about 1
year after a new release, bought the contract got the upgrade then waited
the next 2 years out for the next "stable" release. We ended up getting what
everyone did (probably less headaches since we didn't go thru interim bug
fix process)and paid approx 1/2 the maintenance costs.

If they'd have kept their maintenance contracts reasonably priced, we'd have
bought every year as we did in the beginning. I suspect we aren't the only
company that realized what was going on. This indicates a faulty business
model on their part, if it is actually better for customers to NOT buy
maintenance contracts.

With the poorly designed smtp security features and the proliferation of
SPAM we took down two of our three Imail servers and in place of the other
two Imail servers placed *Nix gateway servers in place, much like Imgate. We
also built out own *Nix based Spam filtering and Virus filtering servers..

So now we have our Imail server hosting pop, IMAP, and webmail accounts,
with the other servers taking care of incoming and outgoing mail flow
keeping the smtp loading down on the Imail server and allowing for more
dense mail box populations.

Frankly, IMail has reached it's zenith in functionality IMO for our business
uses and it makes no difference about upgrades or support for that matter.
The last two versions have only seen minor feature improvements, IMO, so I'm
happy to use our "fully paid for" software un-supported for the foreseeable
future.

BTW, my 8.0 maintenance contract is about one month old, which was supposed
to be for a year. I expect that Ipswitch will honor that at least as far as
patches go. We'll see.

I also suspect that an argument could be made that if you hold a valid Imail
Server contract, they owe you, free of charge, ICS as it is the current
version of Imail.

Imail server is pretty much a dead end street, they've known it for awhile
now, we are just now finding out. Too bad, but as I said, v.8 is pretty
darned stable and I'll be happy to use it for the next 3 years minimum. If
worse comes to worse, I'll transition to a unix pop imap webmail platform.
I'm already using that for my internal business use. My customers do like
the remote admin over the web functions, though, so that may be tougher nut
to crack on a *Nix platform.

Say bye, Imail Server!
