I think part of this is probably due to the fact that open source mail servers are probably looking to kick Ipswitch's a**. Postfix is pretty easy to set up, though it would be nice if someone would release source code with SMTP auth support built in. Certainly if we go anywhere now, it is to Postfix (sendmail is way too ickky), where we have no licensing fees whatsoever. We'd still need to find a webmail and AV solutions.
Use amavisd-new with postfix and hook into just about any AV production you want.
For webmail you can use something free and not 100% pretty like squirrelmail, horde, etc ...or you can buy a commercial webmail package (there quite a few of them).
If you have the technical expertise and drive you can build a free or very cheap full email solution that will basically blow IMail away. There are reasons for certain people companies to use products like IMail, however, performance isn't one of them. A postfix/courier/postfixadmin solution will easily blow IMail away in all respects except maybe ease of use for a novice. Products like IMail have a market, however, any company/person that is a bit more technically inclined should be running an all unix solution, period.
