Thanks for all the info here, I am pretty sure I will take the plunge since
there is little to lose and I can always fall back and to this if I need to.
However I doubt that I will be looking back now.

I've downloaded and migrated my users over from my production server
flawlessly. There is of course, some initial configuration that you'll want
to go through.

I've migrated 6 times now, all successful migrations. There were a few
failures the first time through but that was because of corrupted passwords
for users in the registry. I highly recommend downloading the password
utility in case that happens so you can reset a password. It can be found at
the link below.

Like any piece of software it's not perfect. I think it acts funny with
Trend Micro. It does work and I haven't seen a single virus get through
after about 200,000 test messages sent, but the support guy told me that
because of the way Trend Micro does it's "real-time" scanning some viruses
may get through if the server is under heavy load. His recommendation was to
turn real-time scan off for all but the spool directory to minimize it.

I also hate their support package. Free phone support for 30 days then
unlimited free email support along with support from their forum. The Forum
is not very active, and their email support seems saturated because I wait
half a day sometimes for an answer but other than that the support
technicians assure me it's just because of the current load of customers
flooding in as they jump ship on IMail.

All in all a great package, and I can live with the email support, the
support technicians don't hesitate to give you their personal email address,
though I think that will change if they get a high population coming over as
they leave IPswitch.

All-in-all it's a great product. Kerio 6 was too expensive at 4k per 1000
users. Merak the interface was not very intuitive, and while I liked
MailEnable they didn't support Domain Aliases, or a Bayesian spam filter or
statistics for usage (domain, users etc.). SmarterMail also tied into our
current enterprise virus protection software (trend) and since we had a site
license that was just another aspect that drove the price down.

SmarterMail will be the way we go when we migrate, as one of the other
admins said here it looks like a copy and paste of Hotmail, and everyone
knows hotmail.

Hi Jim,
I just looked at your site earlier, and may just shop with you. I am
thinking about getting the whole line, SmarterMail, SmarterStats and Helm.
Maybe even SmarterTickets. I think what I'll do is DL them all first and
play with them on a test server to see if I can make it all work with
minimum hassles.

Will I need another extra license of Helm to run on the email server?

Users and (encrypted) passwords are stored in XML files and there are no
Windows users (CALs) required.

Also, I have worked with SmarterTools for a while on the entire product line
and they are very responsive and polite to work with on issues and new
features. (The also treat their resellers well too.)

One thing is for sure with the cost of this product being what it is, it's
not going to break anyone up to purchase it. Perhaps with enough happy
customers plugging it like we all did Imail, and maybe some sort of support
list with archives like what we have here it may not be all that long before
they will be a top seller as well. I think I am going to test it out since I
am interested in two of the control panels that support it anyway.

My only other question that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is how it
stores users and passwords for authentication? Since it is built around the
MS .Net framework, I wonder if we will end up needing and unlimited Web CAL
for the server that it runs on? If anyone has an answer, please post.

I have established communications with SmarterTools early this week and thus
far have been happy with the responsed I've gotten. I'll be testing
SmarterMail this week and if all goes well I'll be offering it to my
customers. Although they are a relatively new company, this doesn't taint
my interest. If they would go under or pull something as dumb as Ipswitch,
I'd just go with another solution. No big deal.

I'm not going to ask my current Imail customers to switch, but when Imail no
longer serves their purpose without an upgrade, I'll switch them. With the
cost of an Imail SA compared to other solutions, it just doesn't make sense
to stick with Ipswitch.

I've been working with SmarterMail all day today. It seems to be a
good performer. I got a license from Helmtastic.com for less than
half of retail (SmarterTools tells me this loophole will be closed at
end of year) and it was for a client that only needed the 50domain/250
user version ... a whopping US$99. An unlimited license is something
like US$230.

For those prices, I can afford to experiment and, if no joy, go to
Merak. However so far SM looks good and I think its a safe bet that
the 3rd party tools we all love will be supported by it soon.

Darn shame Ipswitch went this route but it did indeed open up my eyes.
