Many mail admins are more likely to manually block an IP if a complaint is received and it does not have a PTR entry that matches the forward lookup.

Another factor to consider is the greeting that the mail server states when you telnet (smtp) to it. Does the mail servers greeting message have a FQDN?

A correct example would be:
"220 ms-smtp-04.nyroc.rr.com ESMTP Welcome to Road Runner. WARNING: *** FOR AUTHORIZED USE ONLY! ***"

Vs.

Incorrect:
"220 mail damon ESMTP ..."
or
"220 bigcompany ..."
or
"220 10.10.10.10" (Ip used only as example)
