Does this happen with IMAP as well or only POP?
Are the sessions SSL/TLS or plaintext (= did you override the mandatory
SSL/TLS requirement)? Non-SSL/TLS sessions use putchar() which on newer
versions of Linux goes through a mutex in case it is threaded...the mutex
is unnecessary since this stuff isn't threaded.
SSL/TLS sessions don't have the issue.
