We are using the mbx format for about 3 years. I reported earlier some
problems with RHEL4 64-bit and POP3 that the option 'leave mail on server'
on the clients was not working in imap 2006. But it seems fixed in the
2007 version.
The person who has this problem is using an older eudora version, I
haven't had any other complaints about this. Using webmail at home, using
eudora on the office and all new messages that come in with POP3 are
marked 'new', while several have been read with webmail.
So I configured an outlook 2007 with 2 accounts, imap and POP3.
I sent an email to the test account and read it with the imap account,
that's ok. Then checked the e-mail with the pop3 (the 'leave mail on
server' option now works, so that's a relief), but the messages are all
marked as 'new'.
So it might be a problem with eudora and my test not being good, since
there is still an imap session open when checking e-mail with pop3 on
the same client.

POP3 determines what is a new message or not via unique identifiers (UID)
assigned to each message. A message with a UID not previously seen by the
POP3 client is considered to be "new" and is downloaded.
Some very old POP3 clients (e.g., ancient versions of Eudora) look for a
Status: header line. ipop3d will write a Status: header in the message with
the IMAP "seen" status as "R", and the oppose of IMAP "recent" status as "O".
But nothing modern does this.
If you are still using the traditional UNIX mailbox format, it is possible
for flags changes to be lost if your webmail client disconnects the
connection without issuing a proper LOGOUT command first. Check your mail
logs to see how the webmail sessions are terminating. Also note that if a
session opens a mailbox while the mailbox is already open in another session,
the new session will kill the old session. Both of these problems are
avoided if you upgrade to a better mailbox format such as mix or mbx.
If, on the other hand, ALL messages (including messages previously downloaded
with POP3) are marked as "new", this may indicate some problem that is
causing a rewrite of the UID. However, I will need more information about
your environment in order to proceed further with a diagnosis. For example,
what mailbox format are you using?

downloading with pop3. I tested with outlook and eudora, the results are
the same, also test the latest development release.
