The mere act of setting \Deleted causes the message to vanish in Gmail.
Actually you can turn that off now. When you go the Labs tab in the
settings, you can enable "Advanced IMAP Controls". When you have done that,
you can set these additional options:
Auto-Expunge
Immediately expunge messages when I mark them deleted in IMAP
Do not automatically expunge messages
When a message is expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:
Archive the message
Move the message to the Gmail Trash
Immediately delete the message forever
