Correct.  It's not the code so much as it is the system calls; there are
separate system calls that have to be used if you want to cross 2GB
filesize on a 32-bit OS.

It doesn't make much sense to fix because flat files perform so poorly
long before you get to that size.

I realize a MIX folder is composed of multiple
files, but does that mean that the 2 GiB is not a problem for MIX?

Not until/unless you start dealing with single messages that are larger
than 2GB.  It will be a while before people start wanting to do that. :)
