I want to buy a new laptop but I'm afraid to buy one which is incompatible
with opensolaris. My dream is to settle on using solaris os for my
day-to-day desktop usage and for application development after project
Indiana released the first version. Indiana has no bootable product yet but
I want to buy a laptop now. Then I thought, if there only was a bootable CD
that when booted specially on a laptop, it will report whether the PC or
laptop is compatible with OpenSolaris; and if not, it will report what those
incompatible hardware components are. It should not only report the
incompatible hardware components but also SUGGEST a compatible one.

With this utility, we can know before buying if the laptop will run our
favorite solaris distro. It's not only a good utility for the user but for
the laptop vendors also. Imagine Dell or HP selling their laptop on their
website with a "This laptop is OpenSolaris-compatible" mark. And other
vendors will follow and start to sell their opensolaris-compatible laptops
too. This will boost the opensolaris adoption.

And oh wait, there's more. Imagine this message when I booted the
"opensolaris hardware compatibility test" on my laptop:
<snippet>
Creative webcam model [EMAIL PROTECTED]& is not compatible with OpenSolaris
because
there's no driver found.
But the following similar hardware is compatible:
1. Philips Webcam model %^$&*$
2. Logitect QuickCam model $%^#&
</snippet>

If you were from the Creative Technology Ltd. and you read this message? You
don't want to see your competitors attracting your consumers that way, do
you? And knowing that the OpenSolaris has already some market share, the
next thing you would probably do is tell your programmers to program your
webcam's driver for OpenSolaris and submit them to opensolaris.org. The
result of this is more and more and more drivers for opensolaris distros...
WOW, that's nice!

=========

OK, enough justification... I just want to buy a laptop now. Is the
"OpenSolaris hardware compatibility test on a bootable CD" possible?
