Device detect is a nifty application, but it stops just short of being useful for the sort of thing that the porter wants to do. It can be tricky to resolve missing dependencies (like a JVM) while standing in an isle at Best Buy messing with a prospective laptop :)
It wouldn't be very hard to roll your own CD that runs device detect, but I think that the point of the post is that this would overcome a hurdle that might help improve adoption of Solaris by the less experienced folks.
