That would eliminate the vast majority of shell programmers, most
of whom avoid ksh-specific features in favor of cross-platform
compatibility.

That would be the case only if Opensolaris' ambitions are to
appeal to a limited audience not comprised of current Linux or
FreeBSD admins.

In this case compatibility is more important than a few features
(IMO). Maybe someday, if Sun plays this hand right, they'll be in
a position to drive such standards again. As of Aug '07, however,
they are some distance from that goal.

Compatibility, device drivers, a polished desktop and installer,
and optional source-packages are the keys to the Unix/Linux
kingdom in my book. If Sun cannot deliver most or all of these
features it's hard to see Opensolaris gaining much market share
from existing distros. Judging by the stock price it would appear
that tech analysts do not have high hopes.
