That would eliminate the vast majority of shell programmers, most of whom avoid ksh-specific features in favor of cross-platform compatibility. > I thought we're talking about making /bin/sh being ksh93, NOT > bash Using bash would be the wrong direction. Indiana should > make thinks BETTER than Linux. That would be the case only if Opensolaris' ambitions are to appeal to a limited audience not comprised of current Linux or FreeBSD admins. In this case compatibility is more important than a few features (IMO). Maybe someday, if Sun plays this hand right, they'll be in a position to drive such standards again. As of Aug '07, however, they are some distance from that goal. Compatibility, device drivers, a polished desktop and installer, and optional source-packages are the keys to the Unix/Linux kingdom in my book. If Sun cannot deliver most or all of these features it's hard to see Opensolaris gaining much market share from existing distros. Judging by the stock price it would appear that tech analysts do not have high hopes. -- Roger Marquis Roble Systems Consulting http://www.roble.com/ _______________________________________________ indiana-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/indiana-discuss
