Actually, it is critically important. The current Solaris 2-10 default PATH selection has been a significant source of dissatisfaction. My view is that if a command is not immediately accessible, it doesn't exist. We want a good out-of-the-box-experience (OOBE) and mucking around with .profile, .cshrc, or /etc/default/* is not a good OOBE.
