If this should happen, care must be taken to make the tools behave as POSIX
compliant as possible. With GNU tar, this means e.g. that you need to use a 
recent GNU tar and compile it with:

./configure DEFAULT_ARCHIVE_FORMAT=USTAR
make

To be complete, we should also have a big warning in the Sun tar man page
that using the optoions:

-E, -T, -@ and some others will create archives that may not be properly 
extracted with other tar implementations.


Note that the current changes create a lot more potential problems than the
people who started the fast tracks may expect.
