Stefan is looking at it, but there's no firm plans yet.

The Xorg server uses gcc instead of Studio because Studio does
not support gcc's version of MMX intrinsics (it supports a
similar version, but without full gcc compatibility, and the
Studio developers have said they will not fix this), and we got
a 40% performance boost in using the MMX-enhanced versions of
the Render extension functions used for things such as anti-aliased
text drawing in GNOME.    This is the code that's replaced with
use of libpixman in the next Xorg release, and we may be able to
use Brian's MediaLib patches for libpixman instead of gcc in
this case (or limit the gcc to libpixman).

As I recall, Mesa uses gcc because of C++ compatibility issues
in one of it's libraries.
