I wonder if these commands are still needed:

$ pfexec mount -F zfs rpool/ROOT/opensolaris_boot_name /mnt
$ pfexec /mnt/boot/solaris/bin/update_grub -R /mnt

I updated (image-update) without executing the above commands and I am running
normal.

They're needed the first time you upgrade from 2008.05 (build 86) to a
later build (build 89 or beyond) but after that, plain old "pkg
image-update" should work fine. It's recommended though that you
manually update your SUNWipkg for now before doing any image-updating
so you have the latest fixes with the packaging system.
Is it possible to also provide live CD images for each build? Thus user could choose to install a recent image for a new install instead of installing 2008.05 first, then upgrade.
