Using "pfexec gedit" is fine if X is working. What if your problem is you can't get X working and you need to create an xorg.conf file and edit it, e.g. by selecting the vesa driver? I think there is still a need to have a easy-to-use text mode editor in OpenSolaris (the distro).
It sounds like joe is the smallest out of the 3 so perhaps that should be included in 2008.11?
