Hi, Rob, You need set/export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim in your $HOME/.profile and re-login, to switch to scim. Refer to http://blogs.sun.com/yongsun/entry/how_to_switch_to_scim. You could also set the input method to scim in the context menu (by click the right mouse button) in text input area for gnome applications. Then ctrl+space should able to activate the scim input method.
