In OpenSolaris 2008.11 and SXCE, there is a GUI for this.
OpenSolaris: System->Adminstration->Time and Date
SXCE: Launch->Administration->Time and Date

To enable debugging,
OpenSolaris: System -> Preferences -> Java
and enable the desired options in the Advanced tab.
I find that most such things can be debugged by enabling
the Java console.

A lot of changes were made between 2008.05 and 2008.11 with
the fonts.  Try the later release.
