I just noticed the same problem. Starting compiz from a terminal
revealed the problem:
$ compiz
/usr/bin/compiz: line 19: syntax error at line 23: `else' unexpected
Adding "then" at the end of line 21 makes it work again.
Thanks Christian, helped me too.
Also, thanks to whomever made the "Appearance Preferences" have
reasonably sane error handling!
