The drivers on the LiveCD should see an usb or firewire connected
optical device. The bigger problem is if the BIOS has boot support
for usb or firewire optical devices. I've not yet seen an x86 system
that supports booting from firewire devices. And some old x86 systems
do not support booting from usb mass storage devices.
