I recently discovered while testing build 111a in a VM that it is now possible
to press ESC when the happyface (graphical) bootsplash is on the screen to fall
back to the text mode console. Unfortunately when I try this on my laptop it
causes the machine to reboot. The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A9 with onboard
Intel graphics (pci8086,2a02).

Just flagging this up in case it isn't already a known problem.

We've observed this, as well as at least one hang. Both seem to rely on hitting the key at just the right time. To work around this you can try to avoid hitting they key during the windows that cause trouble (once you've identified them).

I've yet to see a system that happens to have a serial port on which this can be reproduced, so there's no particularly good way to debug this as it seems to happen before dumps are available.

BTW, you mention a VM, and then you state that your laptop rebooted, this didn't blow away the hardware from inside a VM, did it?
