That's what I'm seeing as well. After I posted my first message I tried the 
same thing on another machine - desktop with nVidia graphics - and it does the 
same thing if I press ESC at a certain point early in boot.

I have a serial port and a second machine, but unfortunately no serial cable.

No - tested in a VM first, then on bare metal. Is there a bug number I can 
track this on?
