Also, with the eee version, kstat shows all the atom cpu freqs, but never throttles to lower than full speed (1.6GHz), unless you change the /etc/power.conf to have: cpupm enable poll-mode (then follow with pmconfig) Does it work? Not in a super drastic way, but it does work some. Normally power use is between 11w and 11.3w, and with the above, the floor is now about 10.4w. Shutting down the wifi gets us down further to about 9.2w. On this blog: http://blog.security4all.be/2008/12/portablepwnage-part-4-installing-ubuntu.html it is mentionned: "The last trick needed apparently were some custom ACPI scripts for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex I found on the eeeuser.com forums. After installing these scripts, my average power consumption dropped from 10.4w/h to 9.5w/h with wifi enabled" So, this might be of benefit... the acpi script he's mentionning is found in this thread: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=420248 Wonder how he got 0.9w/h. Looks like the scripts tweak the fan operation, that sounds risky. Also FSB powersave is tweaked and maybe some other stuff.
