Thanks Alan,

X starts with
bell percent: 50 bell pitch: 400 bell duration: 100

Is there a way to change the default or are these settings hardcoded?

Tom,

Two questions:

1) is there a way to make the change permanent?

2) how do I read the current setting of the system beep? I mean, I'd
like to see what are the settings that cause the screech.

Thanks,

Antonello

Both, unfortunately. It seems that the system beep has turned into a
very
annoying screech with snv_118. So now I have a new question. Does
anyone
know how the get the old system beep back?

Answering my own question here.

    xset b 5 100 20

makes the system bell much more pleasant.
