Thanks for the info. As far as I know ' Chironji ' ( as I have heard it
pronounced ) is used as a top dresssing for methais ( Indian sweets ) like
sliced almonds and crushed cardamoms. I have come across its sale in some Delhi
markets along with other seeds like pumpkin, melons, cucumber etc. Yes,
shelling is rather tedious, which is reflected in the price accordingly.

Charoli (Buchnania lanzan) and Vavla (Holoptelia integrifolia) both are edible.
Charoli fruits are also used in locally made shrikhands as toppings. While
Holoptelia is also called as Monekey Biscuit and feasted by monkeys. Humans too
eat it…although taking out small seeds from the papery covering becomes a
tedious job. The seeds taste like groundnuts.

Thanks Neil for the clarification. Are the seeds of both similar or from same
family ?

During season we used to eat the seeds while at school. Perhaps we were using
the wrong Hindi name.

Hi Mahendra,

Chironji or Charoli is Buchanania lanzan. The local name of Holoptelia
integrifolia is Vavla.

                          Regards,

Common name in Hindi, please, to confirm if Chironji is right. Saw it in
Gwalior. Perhaps Anand Bhatt ji has come across it.
