The original meaning of default is 'a fault' not a fix for a fault. Programmers love playing on words, hence the opposite meaning in software.
When we walk into a garment shop and ask for a t-shirt, the salesman shows us a few samples based on some sensible assumptions. It is the same process working here. > In any case i think it is possible to have a completely different word > which fits the purpose without unnecessary drawing ins of parallels > with other english words! True. Most software terms are metaphors often from different perspectives. Where else can one find a window on a desktop :-). So it is difficult for most people to grasp the concept behind a particular term. Once translators grasp it they are free to map it to the vernacular. I believe Sanskrit has a ruleset (convention?) to compose words for new concepts from a pool of around 2000 roots.
