The Income Tax e-filing site (
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/index.do ) has released Return
preparation software in .pdf and Microsoft Excel. The pdf utility is only
for ITR-1 and is unavailable for ITR-2 to ITR-4. Even for ITR-1 the pdf
utility is buggy (It refused to add TDS by banks on Fixed deposits for my
return).
>From the form, the utility produces an xml file which has to be submitted
to the eFiling site. The Schema for the xml is published. The tax
calculation rules are specified in obscure fashion (who gains?) but are
fairly simple and straightforward.
Someone should try the excel spreadsheet utility with OpenOffice. It may
work this year. Last year it did not.
Can the Free Open community create the tax preparation software with Open
standards and Open software like Open Office Spreadsheet? Maybe this year it
is too late. But we should be ready for next year. The taxman has probably
paid for the pdf and Excel utilities and can pay for the Open utilities as
well.
