June 03, 2005 RedHat Creates Fedora Foundation and Calls for Patent Reform
RedHat has taken a move to improve its profile in the open source community
by making its Fedora Linux project its own organization, in addition to
increasing its patent reform efforts in the US and Europe. According to
reports, the Fedora project will transfer development work and the copyright
of contributed code to the foundation, but RedHat will still contribute
financial and technical support towards the project.
The proposed patents common is designed to enable developers to exchange
ideas with fewer concerns about patent infringements, and is part of a
bigger move to reform the patent system in both the US and Europe. Matthew
Szulik, RedHat's CEO, said that patent reform discussions are ongoing to
ensure that information can be shared transparently throughout the world.
"What does it mean when one single American supplier controls how
information moves across Europe?" Szulik asked, referencing Microsoft's
struggles with fines and modifications to its Windows operating system in
Eurpoe.
