Booster-Seat Use Needs Boost

Although MVAs remain the leading cause of death for children of all ages, children ages four to seven who ride in booster seats are 59% less likely to be injured in a crash than children restrained only by a safety belt. However, a report to be published in Annals of Emergency Medicine shows that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, only about 21% of children ages 4 to 8 rode in a booster seat at least on occasion. The JEMS EMS Research Grant awards $1500 to an individual or agency for the completion of a research project that studies the impact on care that results from having two paramedics on each ALS call vs. the use of only one paramedic. The JEMS/Elsevier Nursing Scholarship provides one scholarship to prehospital personnel (EMT or EMT-Paramedic) who want to pursue a nursing degree.
