"The subway project, covering a distance of 14.5 kilometres, will continue to be implemented," the Media Indonesia daily cited Sutiyoso as saying. He was speaking after meeting the visiting president of Japan's Itochu Corporation, Uiciro Niwa. Itochu has formed a consortium with two local firms to build the project. Sutiyoso said he will consult with President B.J. Habibie so that the president can issue a decree to allow the project to proceed. The construction of the subway linking south and north Jakarta will be the first phase of a combined network of subways, toll roads and city train network to serve the city of some 11 million people. Another consortium from Germany's Ferrostaalh and six local companies also expressed interest in the project, but dropped out of the race following the economic crisis here. The project had earlier been scheduled to start construction in 1998 and become operational in the year 2001 but work on it was suspended following the economic crisis which hit Indonesia in mid-1997. bs/akp ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Didistribusikan tgl. 2 Feb 1999 jam 09:46:45 GMT+1 oleh: Indonesia Daily News Online <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.Indo-News.com/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
