Officials from East Timor to make protest visit to Jakarta

DILI, East Timor, Feb 2 (AFP) - A delegation of officials from East Timor
is to leave for Jakarta to lobby against Indonesia's offer to consider
independence for the territory, officials here said Tuesday.
"The delegates will leave for Jakarta tommorow (Wednesday)," a member of
staff at the Dili district headquarters, who declined to be named, told AFP.
He said the chief official in Dili district, Domingos Soares, left on
Sunday for personal reasons.
A source at the office of the governor said the heads of all East Timor's
13 districts, accompanied by the heads of the district parliament and other
officials, will leave for Jakarta on Wednesday.
The delegation plan to protest to the government its announcement last
week
that Indonesia may let go of East Timor, which it annexed 23 years ago, if a
UN-backed proposal for wide-ranging autonomy for the troubled province was
rejected by the population there, the source said.
The trip to Jakarta had been agreed after the members of the delegations
and other officials met for two days over the weekend at the residence of
Governor Jose Osorio Abilio Soares.
In Jakarta, sources close to the palace said that no meeting between
President B.J. Habibie and a delegation from East Timor had been scheduled
yet.
The independence annoucement has sparked tension in the former Portugese
colony of East Timor.
Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975 and unilaterally declared the
territory its 27th province the following year but the move has not been
recognized by the United Nations which still views Portugal as the official
administrator.
The meeting at the governor's residence called on everybody in East Timor
to refrain from engaging in "anarchist" actions which will hurt dialogue
between the different factions in the province.
