Fresh violence breaks out again in riot-torn Ambon in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Feb 2 (AFP) - Fresh violence, including looting, broke out in
the
eastern Indonesian town of Ambon which was wracked by days of unrest last
month which left at least 65 dead, a resident said Tuesday.
"Looting broke out near the Mardika market, and warnings shots were fired
but the crowd appeared to be unfazed and the looting continued," a resident
told AFP by telephone from Ambon.
She said the incident took place around 1:15 pm (0415 GMT) and that the
city's shops and businesses immediately closed and public transport
disappeared from the streets.
"It is once again a dead city, nobody is out on the streets again. I
myself
do not dare to go to the market today," the resident said.
The Maluku province police could not be immediately contacted for
confirmation.
Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, was hit by at least five days of
widespread unrest that started on January 19 following a dispute between a
migrant Moslem and a Christian public transport driver.
The dispute quickly degenerated into unrest opposing the city's Moslem
and
Christian communities. The unrest also spread to other islands within
Maluku,
leaving at least 65 dead and widespread destruction.
Mardika market was burned during the initial rioting and a makeshift
market
had developed around it.
