KOLOM SUPANGKAT:

        INTEGRATIONISTS WOULDN'T OPPOSE INDEPENDENCE, IF............

Integrationists opposed independence because they were being indoctrinated so
by the Indonesian Intelligence. Once Xanana gave the assurance that they will
be protected and Mario Carrascalao or any other integrationist leaders are
includ-
ed in the provisional regime, they would love independence under the
leadership
of their own fellow East Timorese instead of under Indonesia who already has a
bad reputation in Aceh, Irian Jaya, Ambon, etc.

Governor Abilio's idea to partition East Timor into two separate states is a
colonial
idea, the colonial powers like the Soviet Union and the Dutch and the British
always
came up with the easiest solution no matter that it will become a time bomb
later on
like Pakistan-India, Korea, Germany. It is a lousy idea.

If Xanana is elected President and Mario Carrascalao or anyone else is the
Prime
Minister or Vice President, and the provisional government includes all East
Timor-
ese elements from both sides equally, there is no reason for pro or contra
inde-
pendence.

The integrationists feel secure under the protection of the ABRI, but they are
even-
more secure under their own security forces whose leadership includes their
own
integrationist leaders.

I know Mario Carrascalao personally since he was still a protege of Indonesia.
He
confided to me that he wants to be independent but he can wait, however I
didn't
betrayed him to the Indonesian leaders that he is at heart an independence
fighter.

So the East Timorese people can trust him fully. Even Lopes da Cruz confided
to
me that he did not want to fight against independence fighters anymore. The
pro-
integrationist leaders will protect their people whenever the new provisional
or the
elected regime of independent East Timor is elected fairly and squarely.

Perhaps leaders like Governor Abilio and integration fanatics could take
refuge
in Indonesia. I am sure we could accomodate them one way or the other, should
they refuse to joint their own independent East Timor.

The hurricane in a cup
The hyped civil war is nothing but an Indonesian bad propaganda meant to avoid
the referendum that would destroy the good guy image. Without the presence of
the ABRI they are nothing but "a hurricane in a cup".

The militias look like they are dominating the violent scenes because they
are protected by the ABRI. Therefore the withdrawal of the ABRI and the dis-
armament of the guerillas and the militias are a "conditio sine qua non" for
peace and integration or independence of East Timor.
