They are in fact the guilty part of the "shepherding", the rigging and falsification of the Indonesia general election for the past three decades. Not a single soul could cry out the suppression because the most absolute power of President Suharto always threatened them with subeversion and long imprison- ment. Now President Habibie allowed political freedom so that Amien Rais dared to go to Washington to ask the Clinton administration, in this case, Vice President Al Gore to have the US supervise the Indonesian election for the good reason: that we have been unable to do the election the right way without illegalities and sup- pressive measures for the past 30 years or so. It is about time that this election meant to be the first one after our 1955 election is supposed to be open, fair and square. If the Indonesian authorities have nothing to hide, why objected to US supervision? It is only one country, not the United Nations as we should have demanded since the UN intervention could only be requested by the Indonesian government who is the suspect in this case. Why did not other political parties join Amien Rais to request American help? Of course it is a shame that we proved ourselves to be unable to do the election the fair way, but we can't only just talk about it, we have to do something about it and Amien Rais did the right thing. Amien Rais has the followings of about 28 to 30 millions Indonesians, so it is more than enough to regard his request to be representing the wish of the people. Indonesians like you and me can write petitions to the US Congressmen who are concerned about our country to support the request for American supervision not only by former Presiden Jimmy Carter but also by the Clinton administration.
