According to Kompas Newspaper, the killings started when local farmers are protesting and demanding fresh credit(s) for their farming activities. Their demands were directed toward the local KUD office (Kantor Unit Desa). KUD is government sponsored credits to help farmers throughout Indonesian archipelago. The newly sent police and soldiers from Jakarta (who are currently stationed near Lhokseumawe area) were sent immediately to Peudada, North Aceh to handle the crowd. According to Kompas Online, Indonesian Daily News Paper, there was series of shots fired from Police toward soldiers, and toward the crowd / protesters. More than ten (10) Acehnese were killed. (The local Humanrights group has not yet confirmed on the death count nor the chronology of the tragedy). Most of the injured and the dead were brought to Bireun and Lhokseumawe hospitals. The scale of deaths from army / police atrocities in Aceh now exceeds the killings anywhere in the archipelago. Early in the month, May 3, 1999, Indonesian Soldiers Massacred at least 45 people in the Krueng Geukeh, Dewantara incident. Some that were killed includes 6 children and some women. Also in mid-January this year, at least 30 civilians were massacred in Idi Cut. And until today, 45 have been murdered in series of killings since August, 1998. None have been brought to Justice.
