BRITAIN WELCOMES HISTORIC ELECTIONS IN INDONESIA

LONDON, June 9 (AFP) - Britain on Wednesday hailed Indonesia's
first free elections in 44 years as an "historic step", which it
hoped would usher in further political and economic reforms.

British Foreign Office Minister Geoff Hoon, said: "I welcome the
holding of Indonesia's first genuinely multi-party democratic
elections since 1955.

"This is an historic step, taking the country into the next
millenium as the world's third largest democracy.

"Our hope is that the momentum of political and economic reforms
started by President Habibie will be maintained," he said in a
statement as the count dribbled in from Monday's polls.

Hoon also announced that Britain would be dispatching seven police
officers to East Timor next week.

They will form part of the first contingent of international
civilian police advisers to be deployed in the disputed province
under the auspices of the UN Assistance Mission to East Timor
(UNAMET).
