Australia Welcomes Democratic Election in Indonesia

Canberra, June 8 (ANTARA) - Australian Prime Minister John
Howard has hailed Indonesia's first democratic election in 44
years, calling the June 7 polls a historic event.

The remarkably peaceful election is proof of Indonesia's
commitment to democracy, Howard said here Tuesday.

He also praised Indonesian President BJ Habibie for his
commitment to democratic polls.

President Habibie has taken a risk for the sake of a fair and
smooth election, he said, adding that the Indonesian leader is
an important figure in paving the way for the democratic
election.

The success of the Indonesian election has made the Australian
people happy as Australia will soon have a democratic
neighboring country, he said.

The fair and smooth election is very significant to the
creation of peace in the region, he said, noting that Australia
will continue to strengthen its cooperation with the elected
government.

"We will continue to make Indonesia our main priority and to
support its political and economic reforms," Howard said.

Australia extended A$ 15 million for the Indonesian election
through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It also
dispatched a 25-member team to monitor Monday's poll.
