UN Official Denies Postponement of Direct Balloting

Lisbon, Portugal, June 18 (ANTARA) - An official of the United
Nations (UN), Carina Perelli, has denied the reported
postponement of direct balloting scheduled for August 8, 1999,
in which the East Timorese will determine the future status of
their region.

"The United Nations has never issued a policy on the
postponement of direct balloting for the East Timorese, because
now everything is being prepared for the implementation of this
direct balloting," he told the media after meeting the East
Timor Commission at the Portuguese parliament here Thursday
evening local time.

Perelli said that this denial has also been reported to the East
Timor Commission at the Portuguese parliament. "I have even
asserted that the United Nations has never abandoned the
agreement already reached by the Indonesian and Portuguese
foreign ministers along with the UN secretary general early May
last," he said.

Indonesia's foreign minister, Ali Alatas, and his opposite
number from Portugal, Jaime Jose Matos Da Gama, on May 5, 1999,
signed an agreement containing, among other things, the process
for popular consultation and direct balloting for the East
Timorese to detrmine the future status of their region to be
held on August 8, 1999.

On the occasion, Perelli also said that the Portuguese
government and members of the Portuguese parliament would also
need detailed explanations about the tasks of the United Nations
in overseeing the process towards direct balloting in East
Timor.

"This explanation is of great importance to prevent any
misunderstanding, and give a guarantee that the United Nations
mission of peace, now seriously working towards the
implementation of direct balloting, will earn support from the
international community," he added.
