Ex-Fretilin president says pro-autonomy will win

JAKARTA (JP): Former Fretilin president Abilio Araujo says
any delay in the Aug. 8 vote on the future of East Timor will
not affect the results, adding that he is confident that the
majority of the people will opt for autonomy within the Republic
of Indonesia.

"Far-ranging autonomy within Indonesia is the most
realistic option for us and we East Timorese realize that. It
doesn't matter when it is held, later in August, in November, or
whenever, the results will be the same, autonomy within
Indonesia," Araujo, who led the Fretilin resistance movement
from 1981 to 1984, told The Jakarta Post here Tuesday.

Araujo was responding to a United Nations plan to postpone
the Aug. 8 ballot for security reasons.

Later on Tuesday U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan
announced he would postpone the Aug. 8 vote to an undetermined
date, sometime in August, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Annan said he based his decision on security and logistics
for the balloting to etermine whether East Timor's 400,000
voters would have far-ranging autonomy under Indonesia or move
towards independence.

Araujo, who arrived in Jakarta last week, was here to
attend a meeting organized by Dili Bishop Belo and Bishop
Basilio Nascimento of Baucau from June 25-30. All the
conflicting parties will be represented in the meeting to be
held in Jakarta as a move towards reconciliation.

"The two bishops called me from East Timor this morning and
invited me to the meeting as an observer," said Araujo, who has
held a series of meeting with various people, including Jose
Alexandre Xanana Gusmao, while in Jakarta.

"I met Xanana last Thursday. It was our first meeting after
25 years, said Araujo.
