Ban: Ramos Horta Not Allowed To Visit E. Timor

Jakarta, June 30 (ANTARA)- The Indonesian goverment has prohibited
East Timorese proindependence leader Ramos Horta to visit East
Timor.

"Foreign Minister Ali Alatas thinks Ramos Horta had better be
prevented from visiting East Timor for his own good because most
people in East Timor will reject his presence," Information
Minister Yunus Yosfiah said after a limited cabinet meeting on
political and security affairs here Wednesday.

Ramos Horta, now here for the church-organized DARE II
reconciliatory meeting between East Timorese pro-integration and
pro-independence groups, said upon arrival at Soekarno Hatta
airport recently that Alatas had allowed him to visit East Timor
on condition that he would not engage in any political activity in
the province.

"What Ramos Horta said is not true," Yosfiah said.

"The Indonesian foreign minister only said he would consider the
matter if that (Ramos Horta wishing to visit EastTimor)
happened," Yosfiah said quoting ad-interim foreign minister Feisal
Tanjung in his report to President BJ Habibie who presided over
the cabinet meeting.

In other words, Ramos Horta did not have automatic permission to
go to East Timor but just a promise that the Indonesian government
would consider a request for permission if he really wanted to
make the visit, Yosfiah said.

"But now the Foreign Minister thinks Horta should be prevented
from going there," he added.

Yosfiah said the Indonesian government's stance had been
comunicated to Ambassador-at-large for East Timor Affairs Lopez da
Cruz for further conveyance to Ramos Horta through the two bishops
of East Timor who are also in Jakarta for the DARE II meeting.

"Meanwhile, we have received confirmation from Bishop Belo that
proindependence participants of the meeting who live abroad,
including Ramos Horta, will not visit East Timor," the minister
said.
