E Timor : UNAMET'S PARTISANSHIP PROVEN PRO-INTEGRATIONIST

Dili, E Timor, July 5, (ANTARA) - Chairman of the Forum for Unity,
Cohesion and Justice in East Timor, Domingos MD Soares, has
maintained that the partisanship of the UN Assesment Mission in
East Timor (UNAMET) with the anti-integration camp has been proven
beyond doubt.

"The clash between the Besi Merah Putih (Red and White Iron)
militia and a non-governmental organization in Liquica (district)
on Sunday has sealed the evidence (of UNAMET's partisanship). And
UNAMET must admit it, should it care to be honest," Domingos said
here Monday.

According to him, the Liquica incident was a serious case.

He said the UNAMET -- which is expected to help enhance a smooth
proceeding for the solution of the Eat Timor issue -- had involved
itself in matters outside its capasity.

Domingos accused the UNAMET of being involved in humanitarian
work, which is not include in the New York agreement signed by
Indonesia, Portugal and the UN.

"The UNAMET was not assigned to a humanitarian project, let alone
support an NGO, which is not even accredited by the government,"
he said.

Domingos was reffering to Care International, which distributed US
rice in Maubara subdistrict in Liquica.

In this operation, he said, the unaccredited NGO only gave rice to
pro-independence supporters, thus raising an irksome feeling among
the pro-integration camp.

The UNAMET's giving a helping hand to Care International made the
pro-integrationists more ill at ease, he noted.

In the Liquica incident, Domingos pointed out, shots originating
from an UMANET car proved that the UN body has allowed its car to
be entered by some making the shots.

Domingos said allowing some sporting a gun to go into an UNAMET
car was proof enough that the UN body had relinquished its
commitment of not taking sides.

"That is partisanship with one of the conflicting camps, which
will eventually hamper the direct ballot and complicate the
issue," he observed.

Deport

Domingos said further that all parties concerned should strive to
prevent such partisanship.

"We have worked hard to make peace in East Timor. Now here comes
UNAMET to meddle in the process and complicate things," he said.

The pro-integrationist said he expects the UN secretary general to
put the UNAMET officials involved in the partisan act into
discipline, or even deport them for East Timor.

"Those who were not in line or were not right should be taken out
of East Timor," he said.

Domingos also said he expects the police to take strict measures
againts those involved in provocations.

He even threatned to take a stronger action of protest.

"The precence of the partisan officials will not only tarnish the
good game name of the United Nations, but also provoke to worsen
the situation," Domingos said.
