E Timor: UNAMET Personnel Warned To Respect Norms Of Local
Tradition

Dili, Aug 5 (ANTARA)-The presence of the United Nations Mission in
East Timor (UNAMET) should not result in damage to the exixting
norms of local tradition, said a local figure.

Eurico Guteres, vice commander of the East Timor integration
fighters force, on Thursday warned that the mission would end in
failure if the UNAMET disregarded the local people's cultural
sensibilities.

According to Eurico there was lately some resentment among locals
against UNAMET personnel for their failure to respect cultural
norms prevailing in East Timor.

For instance, their habit of exposing their bodies while
sunbathing on the beach was a violation of the local tradition and
had the potential of morally corrupting the local people, he said.

In addition, some Metiaut villagers had caught an UNAMET staffer
red handed in committing adultery with a local girl near Mother
Maria cave.

"The attitude of some UNAMET personnel who fail to respect the
existing norms and local tradition in that district could hamper
the socialization mission for special autonomy and a direct ballot
on East Timor," Eurico said.
